Choosing attribution windows when sessions are short
Utility and content apps with brief first sessions need different click and view windows than apps with long onboarding. A field note from recent Bangkok reviews.
Short-session apps—weather, transit, quick commerce browsers—often see the first meaningful event within minutes of install. Long click windows can inflate partner credit for users who would have installed anyway after seeing a store listing.
In recent install attribution audits for Bangkok publishers, we asked teams to plot time-to-first-open and time-to-first-key-event. When both medians sit under two hours, a seven-day click window rarely adds decision value for daily UA pacing.
View-through windows deserve the same scrutiny. High-frequency display placements can claim installs that belong to brand search if the view window stretches across several days. Narrow the view window first, then review disputed partner invoices with that policy in hand.
Write the chosen windows into a one-page memo shared with finance and media partners. App analytics work stalls when each stakeholder remembers a different rule from a previous MMP setup.
Revisit the memo after major OS privacy changes or after you add a new high-spend channel. Windows are not set forever; they should match how people actually discover and open your app.
